Catalyst 4 Change is proud to serve as the lead and accountable organisation for the Pathways to Independence project. Funded by Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and delivered in partnership with a range of community-led organisations, this initiative forms part of the Sustainable Community Initiative (SCI). Its aim is to provide culturally appropriate, inclusive, and empowering support for individuals facing mental health challenges.

We are pleased to share that delivery partners are now actively delivering sessions within secure care units across Birmingham. These units provide care and support for individuals with a range of mental health challenges, including those preparing to transition into community living. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with one service user saying, “I look forward to it every week. It’s the best part of my week.”

Current programmes include music production, podcasting, employability and job readiness, and a variety of sports activities. These sessions are delivered in a way that reflects the cultural identity and lived experiences of service users. Ensuring the support is meaningful, relevant, and grounded in community needs.

We are also proud to announce the opening of the Pathways to Independence Community Hub in North Birmingham. This space offers group activities and one-to-one support for those transitioning into independent living, providing a vital link between secure services and community-based recovery.

Activities range from creative arts and life skills workshops to personal coaching and practical support with housing, health, and wellbeing.

This culturally-informed, community-based approach is central to helping service users build resilience, develop confidence, and reconnect with their communities in a safe and supportive environment.

Stay tuned for further updates as we expand the programme and continue to build a network of empowerment, opportunity, and hope.
